September 2002’s Spotlight shines very brightly on Brother Stephen Black. Steve was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 19, 1933. He is a graduate of Boys High and Fordham University where he received a B.A. degree in History. Steve served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955, during the Korean War. He spent the majority of his military service aboard ship in the Far East. He joined the Transit Police in May 1965 after spending nine years at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Steve served in Districts 7, 30, 32, 20 and 33. He retired in July 1985, as a police officer, following his assignment to the Applicant Investigation Unit where he worked for 5 years as an investigator. Among his many law enforcement related accomplishments, Steve is most proud of his tenure in the first Transit Police Minority Recruitment Unit, where he helped many young Black, Hispanic and female residents of NYC consider the Transit Police as a career. Steve is also very proud of his accomplishments as an investigator in AIU. Of his accomplishments, on a more personal note, Steve is proud of being a part of the Transit Police and New York State Police Olympic teams. In 1974, in the New York State Police Olympics, Steve won the gold in the 440 yd run and he anchored the Transit Police team to the Gold Medal in the mile relay. Later that same year, as a member of the NYS Police Olympic team, competing in San Francisco, Steve won a Silver Medal in the 400 meter run and his NYS team won the Gold in the mile relay. During his 20 year career, Steve was very active in both the PBA and the Cerberean Society/Guardian Association serving as a delegate in both organizations. He continues to serve as the Treasurer of the Retired Guardian Fraternal Association, having held that position for the past 4 years. He is a founding member of the Century Club. Steve is an avid bowler, belonging to two leagues and bowling from two to three times every week. He boasts an average of over 200. Steve has been married to his wife Dorothy for 43 years and has two sons, Stephen and Gerard. He resides in Laurelton and can be emailed at StvBlack@juno.com |
