The Retired Guardians Fraternal Association is honored to place Brother Lloyd Finley in our ‘Spotlight’ for May 2007.
Lloyd was born on July 11, 1945 in Bronx, New York. He is a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School and attended Bronx Community College upon graduation from Clinton.
Lloyd attended City College from 1977 to 1980 where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts. He also completed 1 year at New York Law School as part of the Urban Legal Studies Program.
Lloyd joined the New York City Transit Police Department in November 1967. He first patrol command was District 2, and he wanted to remind anyone reading this spotlight,
that by District 2 he meant 125th St. and Lexington Ave. He then went on to District 11 and then
to Brooklyn Criminal Court as part of the Brooklyn Arrest Processing Unit or BAPU. Lloyd was promoted to sergeant in 1985 and went back to District 11. One year later he returned to BAPU, where he served for the next 10 years. Two years after being promoted to sergeant, Lloyd was elected to President of the Transit Police Guardians Association. He holds the distinction of being the longest serving president in the history of the association, serving from 1987 to 1994. During the period of his presidency the association and African American officers experienced some tumultuous times, including the Pannell and the Desmond Robinson shooting incidents. Lloyd also served as Chairman of the Grand Council of Guardians. He was rewarded for his hard work by being named “Guardian of the Year” and by being honored by the Federation of African American Civil Servants.
Lloyd has been married to his wife Geri for 22 years and upon his retirement relocated to Palm Coast, Florida. He and Geri have 5 children, 11 grandchildren and one great
grandchild. Not wanting to be stagnant in his retirement, Lloyd is the Assistant Basketball Coach of the Freshman Team at Flagler Palm Coast High School. He can be reached via email at lilrudy943@aol.com
