BROTHER KENNETH VANAGER

This month's ' Spotlight ' lands on Kenneth Vanager. Kenny was born in Brooklyn, New York, March 6, 1939. A graduate of Far Rockaway High School, Kenny has attained an Associate Degree in Political Science, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Behavioral Science from John Jay College. He served in the U.S. Army, in Germany, from 1963 to 1965.

Kenny became a member of the NYC Transit Police Department, May 3, 1965, and worked in Districts #33 and #22, CSPS, District Anti-Crime, District #1, and the NYPD Applicant Processing Center-Transit Squad. He retired May 3, 1990, in the rank of Sergeant. Kenny is an avid traveler, but has still found the time to attend every Retired Transit Guardian reunion since its inception in Orlando, Florida. What makes that most notable is that outside of the organizers, Kenny Vanager is the only Retired Guardian with that distinction.

Kenny is most proud of his efforts in getting many minority candidates into the job when he was a sergeant in the NYPD Applicant Processing Center. There, he was able to help the candidate over some of the hurdles that would have caused disqualification otherwise. Way to go, Kenny !

Kenny remains active in retirement, and is presently on the Retired Guardians Board of Directors. He is also active in his church, the New Hope Baptist Church of Rockaway Beach, where he is President of the Joint Usher Board. He is married to Eula, and this 40 year union has produced 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Kenny lives in West Hempstead, New York, tinkers with his PC, and can be E-mailed at Mrkennyv@juno.com.
