BROTHER KENNETH NELSON This month’s ‘Spotlight’ proudly shines on one of the Retired Guardians most loyal members, Brother Kenneth Nelson. Kenny was born on August 18, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas. He is a graduate of Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx and attended New York Technical College, in Brooklyn, for two years. Ken joined the United States Air Force in 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1965. He served the majority of his military career in Okinawa, Japan. Ken became a member of the New York City Transit Police Department in December 1968 and served in District #3, District #30 and the Fare Evasion Unit before ‘settling’ into the Court Unit at Brooklyn Family Court where he worked for 16 years. During his During his nearly 25 year career he was cited with an Honorable Mention award and he retired in July 1993. Kenny has always been an active Transit Guardian member and served twelve years their delegate to the Federation of African American Civil Servants. One of the events of which he is most proud happened on July 21, 1991, when he, his wife and children were all honored with the Transit Guardians Service Award for their outstanding efforts over the years at the annual Transit Guardian outings, especially with volleyball. Kenny has been married to his wife Carolyn for over forty years, a union blessed with two children. He resides in Co-op City, Bronx, New York and can be reached via e-mail at Thekidd818@aol.com
