BROTHER JOHN T. HENEGAN

This month’s ‘Spotlight’ shines on another retiree who ‘went home’, Brother JOHN T. HENEGAN. He is better known as Troy, and was born June 20, 1938, in Bennettsville, South Carolina. He is a graduate of the Marlboro County Training and High School High School in Bennettsville. He attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and was awarded Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Physical education. Troy continued his academic pursuits at Long Island University, Brooklyn, New York, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.

Troy served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. The bulk of his service was performed at Fort Dix Army base in New Jersey, as an instructor of intermediate Morse Code. He became a member of the Transit Police Department in June 1965, and worked in Districts #8, #32, the Headquarters Unit Records Desk and the Academy at 300 Gold Street. A superior athlete, Troy was active in basketball and softball in District competition. He retired in July 1989.

Retirement for Troy did not mean heading south for a life of fishing and relaxation. His Transit Police background led him to the Bennettsville Police Department, where he was employed for four years. He then did four and one half years as a member of the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina. His academic background and his social consciousness caused him to do tutoring, as well as becoming involved with a program called ‘Healthy Start’, which counseled teenagers in an attempt to show them the way to a better life. Troy taught at Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College for four years. Constantly striving to improve the conditions of others, Troy is a prime example of one “giving back to the community”. Troy considers his decision making ability as one of the things he is most proud.

Troy has been married to Betty for 45 years, a union that has produced three children and four granddaughters. He lives in Bennettsville, South Carolina and can be contacted via e-mail at jthen38@bellsouth.net
