The November 2003 Spotlight is proud to shine it’s beam on one of our longtime members, Brother James Boone. Jimmy, or affectionally known to many as “J.B.”, was born in Burlington, North Carolina on September 4,
1940. He graduated from Jordan Sellers High School before moving on to Tennessee State University. Jimmy migrated to New York in 1959 and joined the Transit Police Department on April 13, 1965. He served in Districts 33 - 35 -
23, CSPS, CWAC and was promoted to Detective in 1978. While in the Detective Division he worked the Robbery Squad and District Detectives and retired in 1991 as a 2nd Grade Detective.
When we asked Jimmy what he was most proud of during his 26 year career, without hesitation he spoke of an arrest that he made for Robbery, during which he saved the life of another officer, who happened to
be a fellow Guardian and a close friend. He received one of his 15 commendations for his actions that night. Jimmy was a member of the Cerbereans and Guardians for his entire career and was also a member of the Honor Society.
Upon retirement he became a member of the RGFA and attends as many meetings and functions as possible. Jimmy was a longtime resident of Cambria Heights but recently moved back to his hometown of Burlington, NC. He loves to
travel and attends as many football games of the traditional Black colleges as possible.
J.B. has been married to his wife Kay for 42 years. He has two children and two grandchildren. He speaks with pride of his son Jeffery, who is a carpenter and his daughter Sharon, who is the Feature and Health
Editor for Essence Magazine. He has one grandson attending St. Augustine College in North Carolina and one still in high school in New York. Jimmy does not yet have an email address but tells us that he will be getting a
computer in the near future.
