We are extremely proud to place Jacques Maurice in our September 2004 Spotlight. Jacques was born on September 26, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of
Bishop Laughlin High School after which he attended University of Port-au-Prince in Haiti. Jacques was a member of the US Navy, where he served honorably. He was assigned to the elite submarine service and operated
out of New London, Ct.
Jacques joined the Transit Police Department in October 1961 and had the distinction of serving in nearly every command, including Districts
1-2-3-4-11-12-30-31-32-33-35 and the Operations Unit. During his career he received two meritorious police awards for his actions during the New York City blackouts of 1965 and 1977. He retired in the rank of
sergeant in February 1980. Jacques was a lifetime member of the Cerberean Society and the Guardian Association and is most proud of being elected president of the Cerberean Society in 1969, a post that he held for 6
years.
During his 19-year career, Jacques was an advocate for the rights of Black officers and a constant proponent that every Black officer belong to the Cerberean Society.
To that end Jacques could often be found at a Rush Hour or School Condition, talking to black officers, and soliciting members long after his tour had ended.
Jacques lives in Brooklyn and has been married to his wife Joyce for 33 years. He has one son.
