It is with extreme pride that we place George Nesbitt Benjamin in our October 2002 Spotlight. George was born on June 13, 1932 in Harlem. He attended and graduated from Boys High School in Brooklyn. George also attended Brooklyn College, City College and graduated from the New School of Social Research, where he majored in writing. He served in the U S Army during the Korean War, specializing in communications with the 86th Searchlight Company. George joined the Transit Police Department in May 1959. During his 27 year career he served in a number of commands, starting with District 6, then CSPS, Data Processing Unit and ending in the Statistics and Analysis Unit. George retired at the rank of Sergeant in 1986. Joining the Cerberean Society early in his career, George often served as our unofficial Chaplain, conducting prayer groups and counciling our members. Among George’s many interests, he is extremely proud of being a Lay Speaker for the United Methodist Church and conducting much needed Leadership Training for our young people. George serves as a District Leader in the Methodist Youth Fellowship servicing 72 churches, where he specializes in conducting youth seminars on Race Relations and Human Sexuality, among other subjects. He is also a member of the Brooklyn Old timers Foundation. George has been married to his lovely wife Jean Taylor Benjamin since for nearly 48 years.
