This month’s spotlight shines on another of our senior members, Brother George Payne. George was born September 7, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY. He is a graduate of
Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn. During World War II, George served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945. The bulk of his military service was in France.
George became a member of the New York City Transit Police Department in September 1961 and served in the following commands: Districts # 6 - 1 - 33 - 30 - CSPS -
District 10 and District 32. He retired in September 1985 in the rank of Sergeant. George served as Chairman of the Board of the Cerberean Society during the Alston administration. George is particularly proud of
his family’s police service to the City of New York. Most of us remember the legendary “Payne Brothers” who preceded George in police service, as members of the NYPD. While their reputation and street “etiquette”
was not part of the training manual, the mention of their names kept many of us toeing the line. George was the “Payne Brother” who chose the Transit Police as his career. Currently, George is the head of the Vestry
Board of The Saint Michael’s AME church.
George has been married to his wife Leanore for 53 years, a union that has produced 2 daughters and one grandchild. George resides in Brooklyn and can be reached by
