BROTHER GAMON STEWART

The Retired Guardian Association is honored to shine our November 2002 Spotlight on Gamon Stewart.

Gamon was born on June 30, 1935, in Sumpter, South Carolina, where he attended and graduated from Lincoln High School. At the age of 17, Gamon joined the United States Marine Corps. He served some time in Korea and was discharged in 1956.

On December 1, 1965, Gamon became a member of the Transit Police Department. He served in Districts 1, 4, 35, 31, 30, 33. He was then assigned to CSPS in District 33. From there he move to Stakeouts and the Decoy Unit, ultimately being promoted to detective. In 1991, he retired as a Detective, 2nd Grade.

Of his many accomplishments, during his 26 year career, Gamon is most proud of receiving the Distinguished Service Medal for his apprehension of a robbery suspect, down in the tracks. During this incident he saved the victim and the perpetrator and had his own leg broken making the apprehension.

Gamon is proud of being a member of the Cerbereans/Guardians for his entire career. At retirement, he immediately became a member of the RGFA. He is also a member of the VFW and the AM Vets. His interests include working out at the gym, writing short stories and he has also made the journey into doing stand up comedy.

Gamon has been married to his wife Beverly for 42 years. He has two children and four Grandchildren. His son, Mark, has followed in his footsteps and is a Detective 2nd Grade in the 6th Pct., NYPD. His daughter, Sally, is an actress, having appeared in in roles on Law and Order, All My Children and Fences. Gamon resides in Laurelton, Queens and can be e-mailed at BSGSRet10@aol.com
