The Retired Guardians Fraternal Association is proud to present Brother Arthur Tate in our February 2005 Spotlight. Arthur was born on June 30, 1942 in Selma Alabama. He is a graduate of R B Hudson High School in Selma. Following high school Arthur attended Xavier University in New Orleans for 2 years. In 1962 he migrated to New York City and joined the Transit Police Department on July 29, 1968. Arthur recalls beginning his career on the 8:00 PM to 4 AM shift in Manhattan at District 4E, Broad Street, under the tutelage of Sgt. Montgomery. He went on to serve in Districts 4, 32, 33, DSPS and the Bus Squad. Arthur was promoted to Detective and ultimately retired on September 1, 1988 as a Detective 3rd grade. When asked of his most memorable accomplishment on the job, Arthur stated that he had many, from collaring international pickpockets to bag snatchers but the arrest of the infamous ‘Subway Slasher’,for homicide,stood high above the rest. Arthur has been married to his wife Sandra for 15 years and they have a son, Michael. He also has a son and daughter from a previous marriage.
