BROTHER ALEX GILCHRIST

This month's 'Spotlight' shines on ALEX GILCHRIST.  Alex was born March 20,  1944, in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Boys High School and entered the  U.S.Army in 1962. The bulk of his military career was spent in New Jersey and Okinawa, and he was honorably discharged in 1965. Alex became a member of the NYC Transit  Police Department in February, 1966, serving in Districts #2, #4, #33, and the  Revenue Protection Unit. He retired as a police officer in February, 1986.

Alex Gilchrist was the 4th president of the Retired Transit Guardians, 1997-1988. It was during his administration that the Spotlight's first honoree, George Daniel, was named "Man of the Year-1997". Alex is particularly proud of  the fact that when his term as president was over, the Retired Guardian's treasury was at an unprecedented high. This was due to successful fund raisers.  It allowed the organization to purchase books and equipment for its adopted  Macon Street branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. The organization was also able to increase, substantially, its contribution to the Foundation's  Scholarship Fund.

Alex is one of the 'founding' members of the Century Club. Twelve years  ago, Alex was one of the organizers of the first Retired Guardians Reunion, in  Orlando, Florida. Alex, Leroy Bines and John Dixon have organized reunions every year since! The outstanding efforts of these men have fostered a large  popularity for the reunions, and the tradition continues this year in Virginia  Beach, Virginia,

Alex lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has been married to Shirley for 31 years. Alex has one son and one grandson.. Alex can be E-mailed at agil731@aol.com.  Alex Gilchrist, out of office , but still serving the organization with his  generosity, ideas and planning.
